Cool Hand Luke [Blu-ray]

It's sweltering out there, in there, anywhere
This movie is anything but cool. The characters are rough, foul, and awkward. The setting is realistic and harsh. It takes place in the scorching sun and humidity. There's many a scene of sweat and overheating men. Luke, though, is cool. He's the figure of composure; he's classy, smart, proud, and witty, but he rarely talks, keeping aloof. Or he's independent free man who won't let anyone get him down.

There's a scene when he bluffs his way to victory in a poker match, thus his nickname "cool hand Luke". Another scene has him fighting with another inmate until he's nearly unconscious, but he never surrenders. Yet another has him eating 50 eggs in an hour for a bet, and he doesn't give up. And I think this is the metaphor for the rest of the film. You can either see him as a cocky stubborn man, or more appropriately, a man who won't give up his freedom. He's thrown in prison and chain gang labor for a case of petty vandalism during a drunken stupor, yet he never utters a...

My favorite movie of all time.
And I really mean it. They used to show this film often on the Superstation. When I was twelve, I watched it; the next time it came on, I taped it, and watched it probably more than 50 times over the next few years (I didn't know for a long time that the TV version has several scenes cut out for length, so getting it on video was a new revelation). What is it about "Cool Hand Luke" that is so moving? Well, it starts with Paul Newman's performance. Lucas Jackson is one of the most psychologically complex characters in the history of cinema, and Newman, criminally denied the Oscar for this film, makes him seem larger-than-life without saying much. Everything that comes out of his mouth is a revelation. The Christ allusions, which are fittingly done, heighten the sense of injustice that Luke is being slowly crucified by the lawmen, simply because he won't bend to their rules. On the surface, Luke seems self-destructive and ignorant, but in repeated watchings of the...

"Sometimes nothing can be a real cool film."
The first time I saw "Cool Hand Luke" I was not overly immpresed with it. I thought he was a "punk" who had desevedly fallen on hard luck.I have since seen the movie ten-twelve times. I think a lot can be learned about "Luke" (Paul Newman)in the scene when his mother goes to visit him. It is clear that he always wanted to please his mother, but he ended up more like his father. Arletta(Luke's mother) makes allusions to Luke's father not being good at sticking around. From the start, there have been many people who have left Luke far behind. The girl from Kentucky, all of his mates, he lost in the War, and finally his mother when she passed on. This was the "final straw" so to speak. Luke was going to run for sure. The true beauty of "Luke's" character was the fact that he was able to give many people, hope without having any of his own. He makes two references to "The Man Upstairs". Once in the rain asking...

I could smell the concession stand through my TV, hear the Bodda Getta chant, and lost my breath with the segment on War Eagle. If you know and love Auburn you have to have this DVD.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, Vol. 7 (Starter Set)

A slow start to season 2
This isn't what I expected from the kickoff to season 2. The group arrives in a futuristic world where a race is about to be held. The prize is a magical feather. Shaoran, Kurogane, Fai, and even Sakura are going to enter. The race is perilous. There is even a risk of death involved. They have 4 people competing, so winning shouldn't be a problem. Actually, it is a problem. Someone has it in for them and there are many traps set.

This is probably the weakest volume of Tsubasa yet in my opinion. I expected something lofty and grand after the great conclusion of season 1. Unfortunately this is just slightly above average.

got it in time
Great product to have if your wanting to collect the whole series. great series enjoyed every minute of it. hope you enjoy as well.

Bleach Uncut Season 2 Box Set

Review on translation and DVD set itself
While there are several other reviews regarding the show itself, I'm going to focus primarily on the technical aspects of the box set. After all, I figure if you're looking for season 2, you already know what the show is about.

The box set itself is sharp looking and made the same as the first season. It's made in 'book' format, which, in my opinion, is a lot more easy to handle than the usual fold-out box sets. While the first season had a poster of Ichigo with character reference sketches on the back of it, this Ichigo poster is blank on the back. There is no inclusion of a paper with the episode titles, which I wish they did. While all you see on the screen are episode numbers, each one does, indeed, have an official title that would make locating favorite episodes much easier.

The special on this set focuses on four voice actors: Michelle Ruff (Rukia), Wally Wingert (Renji), Spike Spencer (Hanataro), and Dan Woren (Byakuya). They discuss their opinions on...

Entryways
The first season of "Bleach" ended with Ichigo, Uryu, Chad, Orihime and the cat Yoruichi leaving the living world for the Soul Society, intent on saving Rukia.

But getting there isn't the least of their problems. The second major arc of the "Bleach" series -- called "The Entry" -- continues our heroes' quest to rescue Rukia from a death sentence, but they run into a new set of obstacles. It's pretty divided between action, slapstick and exposition, as well as a series of mysteries and conspiracies -- and a lot of likable new characters.

Ichigo and Co. narrowly make it into the Soul Society, almost losing Uryu along the way. And unfortunately -- between lethal captains and a building-sized Gatekeeper -- it's almost impossible to get inside the Soul Reapers' fortress, the Seireitei. Their only way inside is to ask an eccentric friend of Yoruichi's, a fireworks expert called Kukaku Shiba, to blast them (and her rough-edged brother Ganju) inside the Seireitei from...

I'm hooked. I admit it.
I have to remember to kick my nephew's butt. He came over to my house and was parked in front of the tube watching Bleach. You know how you kinda are half watching something and you get roped into it? Well that's what happened to me. We'd missed some of the first season, so I bought it on DVD. I've actually watched through the third season on Youtube, but I started buying the DVDs. I WILL HAVE THEM ALL!!!

I don't go into technical details about the quality of the DVD or the extras. Truth be told, outside of the trailers, I don't watch any DVD extras at all. I like the English dub because I don't want to spend the entire show squinting at subtitles. All I can say is that it's a show that needs to be enjoyed as it is. Don't try to read too much into it. It's an adventure story about young heroes, and it's filled with everything that it entails. Ichigo, Chad, Orihime and Uryu are headed to Soul to rescue Rukia. You know, from the first season I thought it was just going to...

The Fletch Collection

A Fletch Collection DVD short review
Got The Fletch Collection in the mail from Amazon yesterday (8/20/08). Fletch is the same exact disc that is found in the "Jane Doe" edition and Fletch Lives is the same blue disc as in the previous dvd release, that is still available for purchase. The set is almost identical to the "Jane Doe" edition in the sense that there's a slip cover and a single dvd case with a "flipper". There is no digi-pak here folks. The only special features are the same ones on the "Jane Doe" edition. Fletch is in 5.1 Dolby and Fletch Lives only has 2.0 Dolby. Both are in 1.85:1 anamorphic.
Great buy if you don't own either or if you want to upgrade to save a slight bit of space.

Will I review this? Sure.
One of Chase's great roles! Fletch was so great when I saw it, I loved the film, and it was quite popular. Chase dresses up in numerous disguises, and the one that he was the "roller skating guru" I didn't even realize it was him. I suppose if you're not a fan of Chase, or didn't know who he was, you might not be impressed with this outing. Some of his references are also going to be lost on today's viewer. However, the film is fun. The follow up isn't as good, but if you like the first one, you'll like the second one too.

nice buy
The Price is great, the product is awesome and the quality is excellent! Thank you! Will buy again! Easy Transaction!

Love and a . 45

"I regretted havin' to fork him in the neck."
Does anyone else besides me enjoy seeing a big name movie star before they made it big? While this wasn't Renée Zellweger's first film role, it was certainly the first where she had a starring credit, and certainly a far cry from her more demure character in 1996's Jerry Mcguire. Love and a .45 (1994), written and directed by Texas native C.M. Talkington (his first writing and directing credit) stars, along with Ms. Zellweger, an early appearance by Gil Bellows (who appeared in a much more famous film the same year titled The Shawshank Redemption and then found a greater degree of fame on the hit FOX television show Ally McBeal), and the ever-entertaining Rory Cochrane, who was once involved with Zellweger, and would later appear with her in Empire Records (1995). Also appearing are Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator), Jace Alexander (Eight Men Out), Ann Wedgeworth (My Science Project), Michael Bowen (Night of the Comet), and Peter Fonda (Easy Rider).

The movie, set in...

The big score and an escape into Mexico (of course it doesn't run as smoothly as that)
As a fan of offbeat indie movies, especially those featuring drugs and crime, this was a not-to-miss DVD. I missed the original release in 1994, but I did see Natural Born Killers, and while I can see the similarities on the surface, they are really two very different movies. Watching this, I experienced twist after twist, so I never knew which of the underdogs was going to come out on top, or who was going to win this round of the battle for life. Renee Zellweger will shock the pants off the viewer as a young trailer park resident who turns to a life of serious crime and murder, so she's worth the price of admission alone.

NOW we know where Tarentino COPIES his intensity! A#1 flick!
THIS is one of my MUST HAVE dvd's! The flick was first spotted on IFC channel and I WAS PROMPTLY DRAWN IN to the energy of this Indie jewel! If you enjoy believable action and complete realism, or if you've ever been down a Texas highway, view this gem! If you get into any ONE of the following, then this is your next movie...: Hot Pants, sex, drugs, Rock & Roll, pistols, law-gone-bad coppers, graphic violence, Texas twangs, Peter Fonda portraying a hippie or white girls seducing Mexican border guards. Now myself, Well, I love MY .45 so I dug the movie! Quintin T is no groundbreaker...this flick was his reference I'm betting...
